3 Furnace Tips To Help You Stay Warm This Winter

If you’re one of the lucky ones in Toronto and the GTA who owns a home, you know it’s not as easy as it seems. Whether it’s yard work or shovelling the driveway, a lot of work goes into maintaining your property – and your appliances. To help, Novel Care has a few furnace tips you can do to get the most out of your furnace. After all, furnaces don’t come cheap, so it’s a good idea to keep them running smooth for as long as possible. This is especially true in this city, where one day might be a nice snowfall and the next an extreme cold alert.

Furnace Tips 1 of 3: Thermostat Control

When the truly cold weather rolls in, the last thing you want to do is race to your thermostat to overcompensate. Yes, it’s cold outside, but think about the strain this could put on your furnace. Imagine being woken up and told to run your top speed when it’s cold outside. Chances are, you don’t make it far. Same goes for your furnace. Shocking the system could really wear it down and maybe even lead to a breakdown. Instead, gradually drop the thermostat a few degrees at first. You want to give your home a chance to heat up and blasting the heat is a good way to be left out in the cold.

Furnace Tips 2 of 3: Check And Replace Filters

Just like a person, your furnace needs to breathe. The filters in place allow your furnace to not pump the wrong particulates through your home. If you don’t clean these filters though, they act as a blocker and restrict the airflow to your furnace – making it work harder. To avoid this, you’ll want to change your furnace filter anywhere from every 2 to 6 months based on the type that you use. This will prevent your furnace from working harder than it needs to, so you can rely on it longer.

Furnace Tips 3 of 3: Exhaust Vents Should Stay Clean And Clear

You may not think of this right away, but your furnace has an exhaust vent that leads outside. Just like a vehicle, it needs to expel what it doesn’t need in order to run efficiently. If a car didn’t have a clear exhaust pipe, it wouldn’t go very far. Keep your furnace running smooth by making sure there isn’t a build-up of snow or ice near the vent on the outside of your home.

Furnace Filter Differences: What You Should Know

When it comes to your furnace and home heating system there are always lots of difference choices to make. Even when it comes down to the small things like your furnace filter there are lots of options to choose from. It’s always important to ensure your furnace filter is the right size for your furnace, but which type of filter is the best?

Furnace Filter Types

When it comes to your furnace filter, there are 4 main types that you can consider when replacing it.

Disposable Fibreglass Furnace Filters: This is the most basic type of furnace filter. It’s also the least expensive type of furnace filter. They’re designed to filter the air that passes through your furnace. They keep it free of debris, dust and other larger particles as they move through your system. They’re the most affordable option because they don’t do much else to ensure the air in your home is clean.

Disposable Electrostatic Furnace Filters: These are a more expensive type of furnace filter. These disposable electrostatic filters work very well when it comes to stopping very small particles, allergens and other small particles from being blown throughout your home. These filters work great if you’ve got pets in your home. They’re also ideal to help filter the air if people smoke in your home.

Disposable Pleated Furnace Filters: These filters do an excellent job of filtering out very small mites and spores out of your home. These filters need to be changed more often than other types of filters otherwise your furnace will have to work harder than it needs to. This can lead to unnecessary wear and tear to your furnace and HVAC system.

Permanent Electrostatic Furnace Filters: These filters are for those that want to reduce their household waste. These reusable filters are simply thrown into the washing machine, and can be reused for up to 8 years. The one issue with these filters is that they’re not as effective as the disposable filters.

The 2 Most Common Questions About Furnace Filters

Our Novel Care technicians visit so many different customers in Toronto, York Region and the GTA and we’ve noticed that two common questions always come up about furnace filters. What is the main purpose of furnace filters and how often should furnace filters be replaced? As we don’t get a chance to always visit our customers before it’s time to change their furnace filters we’re hoping this posting will provide a little more information about furnace filters so our customers can take action before it’s too late.

What’s The Main Purpose of Furnace Filters?

One of the easiest ways to explain why you need a furnace filter and what it does is by comparing it to the human respiratory system. Every human has one thing in common, which is the need to breathe. Each of us has small hairs inside of our nose which are there to ensure that dust, pollen and other floating particles are collected so they don’t get into our lungs. Furnace filters operate in a very similar way. As your furnace pulls air from your home to heat it up and redistribute it, it passes through your furnace filter. This filter ensures that dust and other floating particles aren’t re-circulated throughout your home and enter your furnace to cause damage.

When considering air flow your furnace filter can also be compared to the respiratory system. If your nose is plugged up and you try to breathe in it’s not as easy as when you have a clear nose and nasal passage. Your furnace filter is just the same. If your furnace filter is old and is clogged it wont’ allow proper airflow for your furnace. By restricting air, flow furnace filters are making your furnace work harder than it has to which reduces its efficiency and the amount of warm air that’s spread throughout your home.

How Often Should I Change My Furnace Filter?

There are a few variables that can affect how often your furnace filter should be changed. The type of filter you have, if you have pets, the type of furnace you have, the environment inside and outside of your home, and the size of your home can all affect how often you need to change your filter. Typically, it’s a good idea to check your furnace filter at least once a month to ensure that it’s not clogged and is allowing proper airflow through the furnace. If you have an exceptionally dusty home or quite a few shedding pets then it might be worth checking more often. When furnace filters are clogged it’s very obvious and they should be changed immediately. It’s typically a good idea to have a replacement on hand so they can be quickly swapped out without the ned for a run to the Canadian Tire or Home Depot.
