Emergency Furnace Services In Toronto

Winter is coming and if you have an old furnace that might be near the end of its life you might need emergency furnace services this winter. Furnaces are machines and just like other machines they break down from time to time, especially as they get older.

When You Need Emergency Furnace Services

Let’s be honest, there’s never a good time for your furnace to break down. It typically happens when the load on your furnace is at its highest. When the dead cold of winter hits and your furnace has been running for days to keep you and your family warm it might run into some problems. It’s difficult to predict what will break on an older furnace, but you can always count on emergency furnace services to help.

You might think emergency furnace services aren’t necessary. Your furnace breaking down might not seem like an emergency because you can just put on an extra blanket and wait until the next available appointment. The problem with that thinking is there are numerous things that can go wrong as your home gets colder and your furnace operates with malfunctioning parts.

If your house gets too cold there is a big risk of your pipes freezing and bursting, which can lead to expensive repairs and water damage. If your furnace is still running but isn’t working very well and needs repairs you might be doing additional damage by letting it operate. When you realize your furnace needs repairing it’s important to turn it off instead of allowing it to run. Some components can be damaged as other components break, so turning it off is the best way to proceed.

A few blankets and winter coats might work in the short-term, but it’s important to keep your home warm as well as your family.

fall furnace maintenance

Fall Furnace Maintenance Checklist

Fall is officially here, which means it’s time to start thinking about getting your furnace ready for colder weather. This year why not be proactive about your home heating with a quick self-inspection using this fall furnace maintenance checklist.

While this fall furnace maintenance checklist isn’t completely comprehensive, it does provide a good starting point to help you understand your heating system. It is by no means a replacement for a professional inspection by an experienced and properly trained HVAC technician.

Fall Furnace Maintenance For Homeowners

  1. Examine the exterior and interior of your furnace with a flashlight. Basically, you’re looking for any moisture buildup or corrosion. If you tap around the furnace with your flashlight and hear and see rust falling then you’ve got a corrosion problem. Corrosion could be caused by moisture, which means you might also have a problem with moisture. This is definitely something you should flag with your technician when you have a furnace inspection.
  2. Check for leaks in your heating system. If your system is running and you hold your hand over the various connections in the ductwork and feel blowing air then you have a leak. Leaks in your ductwork can reduce the efficiency of your system. One quick fix is to use a high-grade duct tape to stop the leaks. Once you’ve done so, it’s also a good idea to flag these leaky areas with your HVAC technician to ensure the problem isn’t a bigger one.
  3. Change your furnace filter. Many of our blog entries about fall furnace maintenance include reminders to change your furnace filter. That’s because it’s one of the easiest things to do and very important. A dirty filter causes your furnace to work harder than it needs to, which will cost you money on your energy bills.
  4. Replace your thermostat batteries. It’s not something we think of very often, but it’s important to always ensure your thermostat has fresh batteries, so it can properly activate and control your heating and cooling systems.
  5. Clean out any exterior vents. These vents are an important part of allowing your furnace to function properly. Cleaning them is an important part of fall furnace maintenance because limbs and leaves can easily clog them and cause problems.
  6. Ensure all the vents in your home are clear of furniture, toys, etc. Allowing your vents to easily distribute air is important to properly heating your home and letting your thermostat know that each room is properly heated.
  7. Turn your furnace on before it gets really cold out. If you wait until the last-minute to turn on your furnace and it doesn’t work you might be left out in the cold. Turn it on early and if you have any issues you’ll know right away, long before the cold weather has arrived.

5 Key Benefits of Furnace Maintenance

Few people are happy that summer is coming to an end. Less sunlight, higher gas prices, cold temperatures, and ultimately snow-covered cars and commutes aren’t things anyone looks forward to. One of the most important things when dealing with everything winter brings with it is your furnace. Your furnace keeps your home warm and comfortable. It creates a space for you and your family to stay warm, hibernate and forget all of the negatives that come along with winter. That’s why it’s so important to properly maintain your furnace. Proper maintenance is the best way to ensure it runs well all winter long.

Furnace Maintenance Benefits

Paying Lower Energy Bills

By properly maintaining your furnace you’re also ensuring good efficiency. This is especially important when you’re placing a heavy load on your furnace during the cold months of winter. Maintenance means that electrical connections are tightened, moving parts are lubricated and all other components are inspected and repaired if necessary. By keeping things running properly your furnace will use less energy and cost you less in the long run.

Longer Life

During maintenance your furnace is thoroughly tested and inspected, which means an experienced technician will look for common issues with your make and model and identify anything that urgently needs repairing. When some parts wear out or malfunction they can negatively affect related parts causing them to have problems. A proper cleaning is also a great way to reduce the wear and tear on parts. Overall, maintenance will increase the life of your furnace.

Less Repairing, More Enjoying

Regular inspections and checkups are the best way to find small problems before they become big problems. Finding small problems that can be fixed with adjustments rather than large problems that require replacement parts is essential to avoiding repairs.

Safer Operation

Annual maintenance typically includes a review of the safety features and problems areas. Depending on the make and model of your furnace this can include a variety of different checks. The last thing you want is for your furnace to be the source of carbon monoxide in your home, or for it to stop operating when you’re not there, which can lead to frozen water pipes on cold days.

Better Capacity

After your maintenance is finished you’ll notice that your system runs better and more efficiently. Its overall capacity will increase and it will work much less to heat your home.

furnace inspection

The Importance Of A Furnace Inspection

Call it what you will, furnace maintenance, furnace inspection, furnace repair, taking care of your furnace is an essential part of ensuring its reliability, efficiency and longevity.

Your furnace is an important part of your home. It moves the air around, filters it, and heats it in the winter. It reduces allergens and dust, and improves the overall air quality in your home. It addresses moisture issues and maintains a healthy level of humidity in your home, even in the winter.

Common problems with your furnace that can be found by a professional furnace inspection can be:

  • Loose ductwork resulting from normal thermal expansion and contraction.
  • The need to lubricate the blower motor bearings.
  • The needs to replace the air filter and clean the dust out off the blower fan blades and AC condensing coil.

An inspection can also find and repair less than obvious problems like:

  • A loose blower belt
  • A blocked condensate drain
  • An aging or loose wiring harness

The best way to keep your furnace operating efficiently is to have a furnace inspection prior to when you need your furnace the most. When cold weather hits you don’t want to be worried about how well your furnace is operating, you simply want to turn it on and enjoy the warm comfort it provides.

Professional Furnace Inspection

A properly certified and licensed HVAC technician will run a diagnostic check on your furnace to ensure its operating as efficiently as possible. They’ll perform safety tests to monitor any gas leaks or CO2 levels, so you can rest assured that your furnace is running safely. Furnace inspection will also ensure that all the various components of your furnace are running properly like the blower motor, the humidifier, and any other mechanical element. A furnace inspection also takes the stability and cleanliness of your duct system into account and let’s you know if there are any glaring problems.

Between Each Furnace Inspection

In between each semi-annual furnace inspection here’s one easy thing you can do yourself to keep your furnace running well.

Change your furnace filter:

  • This doesn’t need to be a scheduled thing, but should be done at least once every few months, or sooner if you check it and notice that it’s especially clogged.
  • This also helps maintain healthy airflow throughout your home.
  • Changing your air filter reduces the load on your fan motor, as it’s easier to move air through the system with a clean filter.
  • A new air filter reduces the allergens, dust and other airborne particles in your home.

Does Your Cat Love Your Furnace?

If you’re a cat owner you may noticed your cat sitting on the heating vent that distributes air for your forced air furnace. It might not even be that cold in the house or outside yet, but cats love sitting on furnace registers. If you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out why the reasons might be more obvious than you actually think. Cats like any other animal are constantly searching for comfort. Whether it’s through eating, being scratched, playing, or sleeping and resting they want to be comfortable.

Sitting on the furnace register is the ideal place to be to get a nice even warmth for any cat. Whether it’s cold out or not, cats love being warm.

Cat Furnace Safety

You might think that your cat is smart enough to avoid all danger in your home on their own, but it may or may not understand where danger lies. In your basement there are a number of HVAC dangers including your furnace. Sitting near or on the furnace shouldn’t be something you encourage and 90% of the time no harm will come to your cat, but there is always chance they get too close to the pilot light or brush up against a hot tube or duct.

Your water heater is even more dangerous for your cat. There is a risk of burning if the wrong surfaces are touched, so discouraging your pets from going near your furnace or any other basement appliances is advised. As mentioned, your cat may have been hanging out in your basement for year without incident, but there is always a chance of injury just like there is to a child.

Sitting On The Heat Vent

Overall, sitting on the heat vent won’t bring any harm to your cat, but there are reported cases where male cats that sit on vents too often or for too long aren’t able to reproduce. This is the result of their reproductive organs being heated up prior to mating and temporarily sterilizing them. Not all cat owners want to breed their cats, but if you do and are having issues with the male this might be one of the reasons.

Visual Furnace Inspection: Take a look at your furnace to see if there is an excess amount of dust or black soot building up anywhere. Is there is then you should call an experienced furnace repair technician from a reputable company like Novel Care immediately. Turn on your thermostat to see if the furnace cycles up correctly. Listen closely for strange noises or loud vibrations that might indicate there’s a problem. It’s also important to prime your nose to smell for any gas leaks.

Turn it Off: Now that you’ve looked it over turn the thermostat off and then the switch for the power. If you can’t find the power switch you can turn the power off at the breaker. Next turn off the gas if you’re planning on checking off any gas related items in your furnace maintenance checklist.

Dusting: Once your furnace has cooled down open it up and use your vacuum to clean out the dust. If there are areas where your vacuum isn’t working use a damp cloth to wipe the dust away.

Fan Belt: If you have a blower with a fan belt it’s important to take a good look at it for racking and fraying. Checking the tension to ensure it’s still taught is also important. It shouldn’t move more than 1/2 an inch.

Filter Replacement: The last and one of the most important things on your furnace maintenance checklist is changing the filter. Turn your furnace back on and if you’ve turned the gas off, turn it back on and relight the pilot light.
